choir singers' heartbeats synchronize

Guiding your breathing from the outside, by timing it to music, for example, also has internal effects.  (Thanks, BoingBoing!)

  1. Wow, that's awesome! I'm a choir singer myself, so I know how we put a lot of emphasis on breathing. Although I must point out that we don't necessarily always breathe at the same time; the article mentions singing in phrases, where everyone naturally breathes at the same time between the phrases, which is how a lot of songs are. However, other songs go on and on with no place to breathe, so we have to "sneak" breaths (taking in a short breath in the middle of a phrase, sometimes in the middle of a word, whenever it's convenient) and purposely breathe at different times. Also, I have to wonder how loosely they're using the word "synchronize"; if all the singers' hearts really beat at EXACTLY the same time, or just all slow down to close-ish rates.
