the french fight school on wednesday

According to this article, "The government's decision to no longer give schoolchildren a break in the middle of the week has parents up in arms."

  1. As much I want to hate on the fact that they are complaining over having 5 days of school (boohoo, so do we), I can understand how the change is irritating.

  3. I know the change is irritating but they can relax with their hour lunch break at school so they will be ok. And I don't recall being asked about starting school so early in August either...

  5. I'm actually going to defend the French parents here, because the article mentions that society was molded to accomodate kids' Wednesdays off. Parents had their schedules fixed to have more time with their kids, and kid-centered businesses boomed on Wednesdays. Now that the kids will have school, you can't expect every weekly tutoring appointment, guitar lesson, etc. to be fit somewhere else in the week; it's likely that a lot of them will be cancelled. For the businesses, that's a LOT of money. And that's besides the un-quantifiable chaos that's shaking up the kids' and parents' lives. Think about it. It's like if the school board suddenly told us that we'll have school on Saturday and Sunday, and instead we'll have Monday and Tuesday off. "Shut up," they say, "You still have a 5 day school week, quit your whining and do your homework." Except now you have to cancel all the stuff you do on Saturday and Sunday (work, volunteering, sports, extracurriculars, etc.) and try and move all of it to Monday and Tuesday. In real life it's not as easy as it might seem theoretically. See what I mean?

  7. I do agree with the parents defending the children's on keeping wensday a no school day. But I don't believe it's only because it changes their schedule. It is the way the government is handling this is why they are so against it. The government took direct control of their lives by causing them to shift activities, it the same here with the bills for tighter abortion control or gun control. Doesn't matter if it's for the greater good, when the government takes control people become tea party members. Yes they seemed spoiled with how much time they get for lunch, but they do make up the time with staying in school longer. But if they are saying the only reason why they don't want this is because John won't be able to stay up on tuesday, I'm sorry that's not good enough. Preach that this is a attempt that the government is controlling our lives, not because your child might be missing a guitar lesson or nap time.
